You Can't Take It With You
This year at Summerset Theatre, you’ll meet the Kirby and the Vanderhof families. You Can’t Take It With You is the hilarious, Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. It follows the riotous antics of a family of cheerful eccentrics, the Vanderhofs. When they meet the staid and sober Kirbys, the fireworks fly!
Three generations of Vanderhofs live under the same roof. Grandpa Martin is the salty and unconventional patriarch of the family. His daughter, Penelope, is a jolly, unpublished playwright, while his son-in-law Paul is a frustrated pyromaniac who makes fireworks in the basement. Granddaughter Essie Carmichael, an eternally hopeful but inept ballerina, is married to Ed who has a passion for printing presses and xylophones. The only normal and gainfully employed person in the family is granddaughter Alice, who is a Wall Street secretary. Into this zany mix comes Tony Kirby, Alice’s beau, who is also the son of her boss. While Tony is amused by Alice’s family, she is mortified by their behavior. When a dinner party is planned to celebrate Alice and Tony’s engagement, things quickly go awry.
